Hi everyone! I’m Estefania Villicana, a proud first-gen Latina and UCLA transfer graduate.
I never imagined attending a prestigious school like UCLA, let alone graduating from it. Even now, it still feels surreal. But I didn’t just earn my degree—I graduated cum laude, received the Chancellor’s Service Award for my work with first-gen students, and secured enough scholarships to graduate debt-free.
My journey wasn’t easy. Throughout undergrad, I battled imposter syndrome. There were times I wanted to drop out, questioning if I truly belonged. But I couldn’t walk away—not when my family had spent years working in the fields to give me this chance. I was the first in my family to break away from labor jobs, and I refused to let that opportunity slip away.
Even with all these accomplishments, I still struggle to see myself as a “good student.” But looking back, I realize that success isn’t about feeling ready—it’s about pushing forward despite the doubt. And if I did it, I know other first-gen students can too. Our resilience and determination set us apart.
That’s why I created FirstGenGuide—to help other first-gen students navigate college, secure scholarships, and access the resources they need to succeed. If you’re on this journey, know that you’re not alone. Let’s break barriers together.
